Happy Homemaker Monday {9/26/2022}

Good evening everyone and welcome back to my blog.

I hope every everyone had a wonderful weekend and are ready for the week ahead.

It's almost 10:00pm and I am just now sitting down to write this post. Today, I have finished 3 loads of laundry ( the last load is in the dryer), cleaned the kitchen for the last time tonight (who loves a clean kitchen at night?), and I have finally picked up the living from a hard day of homeschooling and relaxing. I just hope my week will be as productive as this day has been.

Happy Monday and have a wonderful and productive week!

The weather outside is:

It's still quite warm here, but the nights are starting cool off.

What we had for dinner tonight (instead of the breakfast plate):

Pasta bake and garlic bread

As I look out my window:

It's dark with a few clouds and  twinkling stars in the sky.

As I look around the house:

The living room needs to be picked up and then kitchen needs to be straightened and the last load of laundry needs to be folded and put away.

7 Tips For Moms Durning Back To School Month

Have your kids started school yet? We are homeshooling both kids this year. My oldest is in the 7th grade while my youngest is in the 2nd grade , so I have been working on their back to school routines for the last few weeks.  So during these first few weeks of school I have been fine tuning all of our routines.

Today's post is all about tips for moms during this hectic back to school time!

7 Tips for Moms During Back to School Month

1. Plan dinner ahead.

During the first week of school, the last thing you will want to do is figure out what to make for dinner. Have a plan for what you will make each night, groceries in the fridge and even make a few meals ahead if you can! I usually plan mostly slow cooker meals for the first week of school. I usually make Mississippi chicken, spaghetti and meatballs, potato soup, and lasanga.

2. Have after school snacks ready to go.

After a summer of eating when they wanted, they will likely be grumpy, tired and famished from being in school all day with limited meal times. Have a few after school snacks on hand, ready to go. I usally keep peanut butter and crackers on hand, as well as packages of gold fish crackers, and fruit. I also make mini corn dogs and and pizza rolls.

3. Get school supplies before the first day of school.

Usually my daughter's school posts the school supply list in early June, so usually start early. Get the basics like subject notebooks, organizers/planners, binders, folders, pens and pencils before school starts. Better yet, order on Amazon or even Walmart. This is what we did. So much easier and no lines!

4. Keep commitments light.

As parents, we will be feeling overwhelmed too. If you’re like me, you want to jump back into things and schedule meetings, lunches and happy hours to reconnect with people. But for the first few weeks, try to keep your schedule free and flexible.

This year, instead of jumping back in, I will be scheduling only self-care appointments like workouts. I will spend the rest of my time getting caught up with my administrative tasks related to life and school. Documenting my goals clearly and planning my schedule of how I want to time block this school year’s hours to reach those goals will be my priority.

5. Set your alarm for 30 minutes earlier for the first few days of school.

When we are anxious, so are our kids. The extra time we have in the morning to help our kids get ready and out the door will help us succeed in starting the day on a positive note. Any last minute forms the kids forgot to give us, or other hiccups will be easier to deal with when we aren’t in a rush.

6. Cut the kids some slack.

This one is hard for me. When my kids let out their stress out on me, my feelings get hurt. I’m trying to work on this, but I do find myself getting angry when they speak to me with disrespect or act rude for no reason.
On week one, I will try harder to cut my kids slack when they are cranky. There are so many pressures and stresses at their young ages. I think I’ll make myself a mantra to say in my head when they are letting their frustrations out on me.

7. The new school routine is not just for the kids.

What have you not had time for during summer? Take time to think about what is important to you and write down your goals. Then make a plan for how you will reach them! As I mentioned above, I plan to take the first week of school to focus on this. One thing I know I have derailed on is staying fit over summer. I will plan physical activity into my routine to improve my physical fitness as well as to keep me sane!

What do you think about these tips for moms during back to school this month? Have a great start to the school year!

How to Start Your Day In A Happy Mood

Nothing is worse that starting your day in a bad, am I right? It really all just gets worse from there. Things get worse and you send out a bad vibe to those around you. So, in tonight's post, I want to share how you can start your day in a happy mood.

How To Start Your Day In A Happy Mood

Practice gratitude: I think one of the best things we can do for ourselves is to remember what we are grateful for. It’s so easy to get caught up in the things we don’t have or things that could be better but every morning try to stop and name 1-3 things you are grateful for.

Don’t look at your phone: You want to know what will make you immediately unhappy in the morning? Comparison. Looking at social media right when you get up will not put you in a happy mood. I would wait 30-60 minutes and do some of the other things on this list.

Get outside/or into the gym: I love a good early morning workout. Gets your endorphins going and you never regret doing it! It also makes you feel super accomplished first thing.

Practice self-care: For me, this may mean doing a  DIY face mask, or simply just my skincare routine. For you, this may mean something else. But do something just for you!

Listen to music: I love listening to music in the morning! Especially, for me. 80s hair bands. This type of music always puts me in a good mood.

Make a healthy breakfast: Eating a healthy breakfast is such a great way to start the day and will for sure put you in a good mood! Especially if it’s something you really love to eat!

Put out there what you want to get back: Say hi to strangers, open doors, ask how someone’s day is going, say thank you and please. Doing these things as you start your day will absolutely put you in a good mood and it will spread your good mood to others. In turn, they will keep spreading the good mood around. Really what’s better than that?

What is something you do to start your day in a happy mood?

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Moms Make at Night

Sometimes evenings can be the worst time of day for moms…we have dinner to prepare, dishes to wash, homework to help with, sports practice or music lessons to drive the kids to, laundry to finish…and the list can go on and on.

With so much to accomplish, we can feel frazzled, with little time to spend on the things that matter most, but our nights don’t have to be this way.

Trying To Do To Much:

I’m SO guilty of this! There is so much I want to do…read a good book, spend time with the kids, spend time with my husband, watch my favorite TV shows, go out with my girlfriends, volunteer at church, check out my favorite blogs, catch up with friends on Facebook…the list could go on…but it’s unrealistic to get all of it done, no matter how much I multi-task or try to sneak a minute here or there.

If my most important goals are to cultivate important relationships with my family and make a comfortable and welcoming home for them to be in, then I must choose to do those activities that work toward these goals on most nights and purposefully accomplish them.

That means that I need to pare down my activities that take me outside the home (or take my attention outside the home) at night on a regular basis so that I can be fully present with my loved ones.

Not Having A Plan:

One of the things that I think is so helpful in taking most of the stress out of each evening is to have a plan for dinner.

Knowing what I’m going to make each night, and having the ingredients on hand because I’ve done my shopping in advance, lets me get dinner on the table quickly and helps me avoid the frazzled “what’s for dinner???” mood at 5 p.m.

Not Being Honest About Your Bad Habits:

Let’s face it: sometimes checking social media is way more fun than reading your kids that same picture book for the 50th time.

We all think that we’re only spending a few minutes checking out friends’ posts on Facebook or searching for decorating projects on Pinterest, but have you ever stopped to actually measure how much time you spend looking at your phone?

I recently realized that I was spending quite a bit of time in the evenings checking all my social media.

After I cleaned up the kitchen for the night, I would innocently pick up my phone and start browsing.

Before I knew it, 45 minutes had passed and I had missed a chance to read to my kids before their bedtime…when one of my goals this year was to read aloud to the kids at least once a day.

Maybe your bad habit isn’t social media…maybe you’re drinking too much coffee and can’t get to sleep at a decent hour, so you are tired the next day.

Whatever it is, it’s a good idea to take a minute and think about how your bad habits might be affecting your evenings.

Not Going to Bed Early Enough

Hey, I get it…sometimes staying up late after the kids go to bed may be the only time you get to be by yourself or to spend time with your husband.

It’s tempting to stay up late to do something by yourself, but are you taking away from the time your body needs for sleep?

I usually try to get to sleep by 10 or 10:30, but on those nights when Downtown Abbey and The Good Wife are on at the same time and I just can’t wait until tomorrow to watch them, or when I’ve had a particularly stressful day and all I want to do is sit and talk with my husband, I suffer the next day because I haven’t gotten enough sleep.

My family suffers too…from my grumpy attitude. And that’s not how I want to be with my husband or my kids.

Not Taking Care of Yourself:

Are you eating too much sugar, not getting enough exercise, not getting enough sleep (see #4!), or otherwise neglecting yourself?

When you aren’t planning for and eating healthy meals, eating too much junk food, or failing to get much-needed exercise, it takes a toll on your health.

As a mom, you are the center of your family’s universe. Keeping yourself healthy and physically strong is a gift to yourself and your family, so don’t feel that taking time to sleep or go for a walk is selfish.

What is the thing you struggle with the most in the evenings?

What I'm Reading Wedensday

Hello Friends and welcome to my blog! I hope everyone has had a wonderful day. Today's blog post is all about what I am reading.  I love reading suspense, mystery, and horror (Steven King is my favorite) novels. So, I thought it would be fun to share what I'm currently reading along with the plotline from the book(s). I will be posting ever Wednesday with the what I am currently reading, what I have read, and what I want to read next.

Next week I will be posting my review on the book "The Perfect Marraiage" by Jeneva Rose.

Enjoy and let me know what you are currently reading!

What I am currently reading

 The plot (from Goodreads)

Sarah Morgan is a successful and powerful defense attorney in Washington D.C. As a named partner at her firm, life is going exactly how she planned. The same cannot be said for her husband, Adam. He’s a struggling writer who has had little success in his career and he tires of his and Sarah’s relationship as she is constantly working. Out in the secluded woods, at the couple’s lakehouse, Adam engages in a passionate affair with Kelly Summers. But one morning everything changes. Kelly is found brutally stabbed to death and now Sarah must take on her hardest case yet, defending her own husband, a man accused of murdering his mistress. The Perfect Marriage is a juicy, twisty, and utterly addictive thriller that will keep you reading all night long.

What I have recently finished reading

The plot (from Goodreads)

SHE WOKE UP WITH A NEW FACE...

Not only has Marla Cahill survived a deadly car accident, but her beautiful features have been restored through plastic surgery. She should be grateful. Instead, she's consumed by confusion . . . and panic. For the people gathered at her bedside — her family — are strangers. And so is the woman whose haunted eyes stare back from the mirror . . .

SHE WOKE UP WITH NO MEMORIES...

Secluded at the magnificent Cahill mansion, Marla waits for something to trigger recognition. Yet the only thing she's left with is the unshakable feeling that she is not who everyone says she is, and that something is very, very wrong . . .

...AND SHE WOKE UP TO MURDER

Determined to piece together the truth of her identity, she finds herself drawn to her brother-in-law, Nick — a man who seems both to want and despise her. And as her fractured mind slowly clears, Marla begins to have flashes of another life . . . of cruel betrayals and deadly secrets. Marla's life isn't just different — it's in danger, controlled by a twisted killer who's waiting for the right moment to strike . . . the moment Marla remembers...

What I think I will read next

 The plot (from Goodreads)

At first glance, few would guess that Luna and Cullen Bodman are siblings. Cullen is efficient and serious while his younger sister Luna is a free spirit. When the two launch their furniture restoration shop/café—an offshoot of the family’s longtime antique business—in an up-and-coming arts center, little do they know their unique talents may be their only defense against a dangerous betrayal.

When Luna gets a strange sense about a piece Cullen just acquired, the two find themselves uniting to solve a mystery that has far-reaching consequences—never knowing there are some who’ll stop at nothing to claim what they believe is theirs. No matter what, Luna and Cullen know they can rely on each other—and this time, their lives may depend on it…

4 Ways to Relax Before Bed

I am a person who loves to keep busy and feel productive. I am notorious for just working right up until it is time to go to bed. Then as my head hits the pillow my mind continues to race and there is no way I am going to sleep for quite some time. Sleep is so incredibly important for health. Over time I have had to implement ways to relax before bed so I can have a restful night of sleep. I don’t do all five of these things in one night but usually implement one or two to help me relax.

4 Ways to Relax Before Bed

1. Yoga Obviously doing too much exercise before bed can be a problem if it ends up giving you a major burst of energy and cortisol spike. However, a little stretching and deep breathing before bed can be beneficial for calming the body and mind before sleep.

2. Take a Bath

I used to absolutely despise taking a bath. Probably because it seemed like a waste of time since I am not the best at relaxing. Well when I injured my ankle a few months ago I started taking Epsom salt baths to help relieve the pain and to help reduce the swelling I gained a new appreciation for taking a bath before bed and started to use the time to relax, think and unwind. It is still something I do frequently and instead of fighting the urge to be productive I just focus on taking care of my body and mind. Also, a super hot bath can just wipe you out and a good night’s sleep is basically guaranteed after.

3. No caffeine.
Cutting down on stimulants such as caffeine can be very helpful if you are struggling to relax before bed. Avoid tea, coffee, or other caffeinated substances in the late afternoon and evening as they make it harder to fall asleep and can prevent the important deep sleep you need. The effects of caffeine can last up to 24 hours, so it can be an important factor in sleeping problems. Caffeine can also raise your heart rate, making you feel more nervous and jittery.
  • Replace caffeine with warm milk or herbal teas, such as chamomile or peppermint.
  • Other stimulants such as nicotine, sugary foods and beverages, and heavy meals can also make it harder to relax.
4. Prep the night before:
Lay your clothes out. Pack your bags. Do whatever you have to do to ensure you’re not rushing around in the morning.

What are some ways you relax before bed? Please share them in the comments below.

I am also working on a weekly planner insert that I am excited about and a note pad that I have been wanting to design for a while now. I am also working on a monthly/weekly planner. I can't wait to see how these turn out. We have also launched a weekly planner on Amazon. This is something that I have always wanted to do and it's always been my dream to have my own planner and now it has finally come true.

I also opened an Etsy shop where I sell of the planner inserts that I make and use in my own planner.

July 2022 Goals

It's hard to believe that 2022 is now officially halfway over. Weren't we just writing about all of our resolutions for the year? Yikes! As cliche as it may sound, time has really flown by this year. Even with all of the craziness that has been going on lately.

July is one of my favorite months of the year because it's full of so many fun traditions like: celebrating Independence Day, going swimming, making ice cold pitchers of lemonade, breezy nights with the windows open, lazy summer storms.....so many good things. Even though we are still staying home and only leaving house when necessary (groceries and other essentials, this is our choice, so no judgement please) we are going to make the best of this summer.

Personal Goals

  • drink more water
  • meditate for 5 minutes before bed. Stretch for a few minutes when getting up.
  • get better quality sleep by going to bed earlier
  • walk 10,000 steps every day
  • Complete one Bible study
  • start a new online business
  • start on a new and exciting project
Family Goals

  • Bubbles in the backyard
  • Celebrate Independence Day.
  • Rent some movies and have more movie nights with the kids
Blog Goals

  • Post at least 3x per week.
  • Make a new list of blog post ideas
  • Schedule posts until the end of the July
  • Create an editorial calendar for the rest of summer (in progress)
  • Start a food blog
I hope your July has started out as a fantastic month. Have you set any goals yet? Any fun summer plans? Have you started to cross things off of your Summer Bucket List?

Please stay safe!!!!

7 Ways To Stay Productive

Now that we are halfway through the year I have been thinking alot about productivity. I feel there are days where I am super productive and then there are days that I am not. Does anyone else feel like this? When I get on these productivity kicks I just want to accomplish all the things. Other days I feel like I accomplish NOTHING. In this post I will be sharing the tips that I use for productivity when I really need a kick in the pants. Here are 7 ways to stay productive that will really help you!

Seven Ways to Stay Productive

Set a schedule. If you are someone who is unproductive then a schedule is a great tool for you to use. I try to schedule every single day to ensure that I am as productive as possible.

Have a to do list. I always have three or four to do lists that I work from every day. I have a general to do list, a household chores to do list, and a blog to do list and a things for the girls. This is super helpful in scheduling my day.

Keep expectations realistic. Always prioritize the most important task to the least important task  and keep your expectations realistic.

Don't over commit. This goes with the one above. You cannot overcommit.  This is something that I am always doing. Be realistic. If you have a deadline and you feel that you just can't make it, then ask for a little wiggle room. I would rather take the change of something being late than it not being done correctly.

Take breaks. I try to take several 10 minute breaks throughout my day. I read a few pages of the current book that I am reading, fold laundry, and I even play with girls.

Find a great work space. Everyone has a different idea of what this needs to be.  I can pretty much work anywhere, just give me a table and a comfortable chair and I am happy.

Remove clutter. Having a clutter free workspace is very important. It keeps you productive and it is also less stressful.

What are some ideas that you would add to this list?

Weekly and Daily Cleaning Routines For Busy Stay At Home Moms

I have been a busy stay at home mom since 2010. Staying up on housework has always been a struggle for me. I often times feel overwhelmed with trying to keep up with everything and sometimes cleaning the house is the last thing on my to do list. I always think I will get to it later, but, let's be honest that almost never happens. So, today I'm sharing with you my weekly and daily cleaning routines. These routines are extremely practical and are so easy to follow.

How to Create a Weekly and Daily Cleaning Routine

To create a weekly schedule, you must first determine the various rooms that need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Instead of trying to do all of the cleaning in one day break up your cleaning tasks by room. Clean one room (maybe two) a day, but cleaning for that room goes above and beyond what a normal clean would be.

Here is my weekly cleaning schedule:

Sunday- wash and change bed sheets.
Monday- steam mop all floors, vacuum all bedrooms.
Tuesday- dust all flat surfaces.
Wednesday- wipe down and clean out the fridge, deep clean the kitchen.
Thursday- wipe down the washer and dryer, deep clean the laundry room.
Friday- deep clean the living room and dining room.
Saturday- deep clean the bathrooms and bedrooms.

When it comes to daily cleaning, there are a few tasks that must be completed everyday, like washing the dishes. Make a list of chores that you absolutely have to get done each and everyday.
And picking up miscellaneous items and putting there up where they belong. Make a list of the chores that you absolutely have to get done each and every day. You could even assign these tasks to various members of your family to help out a bit.

Here is my daily cleaning schedule:

There are a few daily tasks that have to be done every single day. One of these tasks is the dishes. Because I cook all of our meals and I hand wash all of the dishes three times a day (I don't have a dishwasher), my kitchen can get out of hand very quickly. Let me tell you, it's not a pretty sight.

Second, another absolutely must clean area of my home are the counter tops. Every night I make sure to wipe everything before going to bed.

Third, I wash one of clothes every day. It's the only way for me to keep up with "Mt. Washmore".

Lastly, the final daily chore I do each day is make sure things that have been left out are put away in their proper places. I make to do a 15 minute tidy up around the house. It's always nice to wake up to a clean and tidy house.

What does your weekly and daily cleaning routines look like?
